Money makes the world go round. And with the hustle to get it, you would think that many people would not be willing to give it away. That’s not entirely true. Even in this ‘wicked ‘world, human sympathy still thrives, making it possible for genuine causes to receive funding.
Social media has offered an unprecedented opportunity for charity organisations and individuals in need to get the support they need at the least cost to them. However, the right approach determines which fund raising causes bear fruits, and which ones go largely unnoticed.
The first step is to ensure that your cause is sincere. You might think you aren’t harming anyone if you claim to raise funds for an orphanage that doesn’t exist or to treat an ailment that is only a figment of your imagination. But you are. By being dishonest, you are taking away the opportunity for people who are in dire need to be helped.
Another thing you must do is to start from your own circle of influence. Why should strangers from other parts of the world donate to your cause when your friends have not seen the need? On Facebook, tag your friends in a photo, flier or banner that tells them about your cause, be sure to accompany your photo with a well-written, interesting piece telling them what your cause is about, why they should help out, and what they can do to help. Encourage your friends to spread the word as well. Depending on your budget, you can set up a page and pay Facebook to promote your cause.
You could also decide to make a short video to be uploaded on Youtube, and an even shorter video for instagram. The emphasis is on the word ‘short.’ Don’t make people feel that they have to spend a lot on data, and then give towards your cause as well. You could go a step further by providing subtitles for your video so that even people who do not speak the same language can understand. For twitter, be sure to get a catchy hashtag and get friends and friends of friends to use it. If you know people who are famous or ”internet famous, now is the time to cash in on such relationships.
Be sure to affiliate yourself with credible organisations. Are you raising money for a sick person? Make sure his/her medical records and a signed affidavit from his/her hospital are available. Is your campaign to help build a local borehole, get the local government chairman and community leaders to lend a voice to your campaign. If you are trying to help Internally displaced people, reach out to the Nigerian Red Cross and the National Emergency Management Agency.
Also affiliate yourself with credible sites such as rsvp.com’.ng,gofundme.org crowdrise.com, justgiving.com, change.org among others. Another thing you must do is to set up an online payment system. People are more likely to give towards your cause if they can do it at the click of a button. Also, be sure to get the contact details of donors and send them gift certificates and financial reports.
