Bluetooth SIG reveals speed and range improvements you can expect from iPhone 7 in 2016

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has announced major improvements that are coming to Bluetooth in 2016, and you can expect to see them making their way to future Apple devices like the iPhone 7 — and some existing ones as well. Not only is Bluetooth going to get faster, but it will also boast better range, and become more intelligent for smart devices.
“The host of Bluetooth advancements coming in 2016 will further energize fast-growing industries such as smart home, industrial automation, location-based services and smart infrastructure,” reads the press release published by the SIG. “Announced updates will provide a variety of benefits for the growing number of IoT applications.”
One of those benefits will be the increased range of Bluetooth Smart, which is set to increase by up to 4 times for more robust connections both indoor and out, potentially creating entirely new use cases for smart appliances and gadgets. Bluetooth in general will see a 100 percent increase and speed, and according to the SIG, no additional power will be required to deliver it.
That means you’ll be able to transfer data between devices quicker than ever before, which is great news for Apple devices — particular those like Apple WatchiPhone, andiPad — which frequently rely on Bluetooth connectivity. The improvements will also benefit Apple’s HomeKit platform, which marries those devices with our iPhones and iPads.
We can expect to see these improvements in future Apple devices like the iPhone 7, and the next-generation iPads, which will ship with the latest Bluetooth technology under the hood. But some of the improvements could be delivered to existing devices, too, through firmware updates. It’s unclear at this point, however, how much of it will rely on new hardware.
It’s also worth noting that these improvements are just a “preview” of the Bluetooth SIG’s roadmap for 2016; there could be a lot more to look forward to later on.
